Yearning for the kind of little corner shops you'd stumble across on continental holidays, husband-and-wife team Cara Lloyd and David Brown decided to ditch the day jobs, roll up their sleeves, and open one themselves.
Cara was a language teacher, Dave had recently sold his business The Big Cheese Co in Dublin's city centre.
David had trained under French baker Richard Hemmery at The Big Cheese. Cara flew to Paris for a couple of stages at the prestigious École Lenotre. And finally, the couple plundered their mums' and grandmums' Jewish-German-American recipe books. When a little corner premises came up just outside Terenure in 2005, they were ready, and with help from Dave's sister Fiona, The Corner Bakery was born.
Nowadays the couple's son Sam occasionally helps out, and bakers Andrew, Maria, Sinead and Kate bake bread and cakes, cookies and bars every day of the week. Aimee, Sara and Rob serve up your fresh-baked treats during the week, with help on the weekends from Sarah and Caroline.
